No one science encompasses both KM and CS. You can earn a degree (typically a master’s degree) in knowledge management from a small number of universities, and you can earn a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. in computer science at many more.

Having a degree in CS is useful to knowledge managers by helping them understand, implement, and effectively use knowledge management technology components. My degree is a BS in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, and I have worked in knowledge management for over 20 years.

It was also helpful to have studied journalism, which was my initial college major. Journalism skills can help knowledge managers in many ways, including:

  1. Communicating succinctly and clearly by speaking and writing. See these posts about communications for details on how these skills are applied.
  2. Producing and distributing content with an eye towards making it compelling, creating a demand for it, and serving the needs of those who will consume it.
  3. Wanting to openly share useful information that will be valued by an audience.
  4. Excelling at interviewing and getting others to answer questions and to share what they know.
  5. Readily using Knowledge Management Technology Components such as blogs, wikis, podcasts, videos, and web conferencing.

Two branches of philosophy are also relevant to KM:

1. Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope of knowledge. It addresses questions such as:

  • What is knowledge?
  • How is knowledge acquired?
  • To what extent is it possible for a given subject to be known?

2. Ontology is the philosophical study of the nature of being, existence, or reality, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations; deals with questions of:

  • What entities exist or can be said to exist?
  • How can such entities be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences?
