To inspire:

  1. Communicate relentlessly
  2. Tell stories
  3. Create and share a unifying vision
  4. Lead by example
  5. Convey optimism through words, decisions, and actions

To motivate:

  1. Set team and individual goals, include them in performance plans, measure performance against those goals, and communicate about goals and performance regularly
  2. Recognize, praise, and thank team members regularly
  3. Offer incentive programs designed to encourage compliance with goals, improve performance against metrics, and fully engage the team
  4. Provide salary increases, bonuses, and promotions as truly deserved
  5. Solicit ideas and suggestions, and follow up with timely action as much as possible
