Answers to three community management questions

I was asked the following questions:

Q1: What are the biggest challenges you face as a community manager?

A1: There are three:

  1. Getting members to pay attention to community activity by subscribing to notifications and actually reading them.
  2. Getting members to ask their questions in the open in the community’s online discussions.
  3. Making sure that all questions and requests for help receive timely and useful replies.

Q2: How is community management evolving?

A2: It is becoming a more formal discipline, with greater acceptance as a required role. There are now more full-time community managers, and more resources for them to use, including training, communities, publications, and events.

Q3: What’s the best part of the job?

A3: Enabling and observing the virtuous cycle where someone needs help, requests it in the community, other members respond, and the requester thanks and acknowledges the other members for their help.
