I was asked the following questions:
Q1: What are the biggest challenges you face as a community manager?
A1: There are three:
- Getting members to pay attention to community activity by subscribing to notifications and actually reading them.
- Getting members to ask their questions in the open in the community’s online discussions.
- Making sure that all questions and requests for help receive timely and useful replies.
Q2: How is community management evolving?
A2: It is becoming a more formal discipline, with greater acceptance as a required role. There are now more full-time community managers, and more resources for them to use, including training, communities, publications, and events.
Q3: What’s the best part of the job?
A3: Enabling and observing the virtuous cycle where someone needs help, requests it in the community, other members respond, and the requester thanks and acknowledges the other members for their help.
